Harm Reduction Program
The Harm Reduction Program grew out of emerging evidence
that syringe exchange reduces HIV transmission. The program links participants
with needed educational, risk-reduction, support, and treatment services.
The primary goal of the Harm Reduction Program is to reduce the HIV
transmission among intravenous substance users (IVSUs). Using a street-based
outreach model, the program teaches IVSUs behaviors that help them
live healthier lives. Participants learn about their role in preventing
HIV by not sharing injection equipment with others and by practicing
safer sex. They also learn about HIV/AIDS, opportunistic infections,
and Hepatitis C.
Services include:
- Street recruitment and outreach, including targeted pre- and perinatal
outreach
- Syringe exchange, which includes information and equipment for
self-care
and cleaning “works”
- Intake and needs assessment
- Referral to supportive services-health care, social services, substance
abuse treatment, HIV case management, and HIV counseling and testing
